Describe your agency’s work:
Achievers Academies of NC, Inc. is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide summer and after-school enrichment programming for the youth and teens of NC to ensure ACHIEVEMENT academically, intellectually, socially, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. We empower local youth by offering a safe and nurturing environment where they can enhance their educational experience, develop life skills, and build character.
What motivates you to serve?
I have grown up as the daughter of pastors who started a ministry over 30 years ago. For the majority of that time, our church maintained a child care program that included day and afternoon programming. We also had a robust youth ministry program that impacted me and the youth in our community. Through this exposure and work experience, I developed a love for caring for and teaching children and youth. My father has passed but my mother continues to pastor and I continue to work for the church. But my love for children, my belief that all children can ACHIEVE, and my penchant for understanding and relating to them motivate me to serve them.
How has your work touched the lives of youth and others in your community
I believe that emotional connections with loving adults help children to ACHIEVE. It is evident by the comments made by our youth and their parents that youth love coming to our programs. It is not because we have state of the art equipment or playgrounds. It is because we care. And to see the look on the parents’ faces when they see their children succeeding is priceless.
Do you have a personal motto or Bible verse that guides your life?
“My present condition is not God’s conclusion for my life.”
Describe your family: (spouse, children, etc.)
I am a single mother with two adult children, Seaira and Jonathan. I have one granddaughter, Ai’lin.
What advice would you offer to others wanting to serve?
Just start. It doesn’t matter if everything does not seem to be in place. Just start with what you have.
